Do you ever get tired of your old clothes?
I’m having a bit of a ‘I’m fed up with this dress’ moment. And it’s not even that old… Well, a year old. In my book that’s not old. I have clothes I’ve had for a lot longer and still wear…
Well, that’s a bit beside the point.
The point being, I’m a bit fed up with this dress…
On one hand, I love the print and the colours… On the other hand, the cut makes me crazy. Mainly because the neckline is a bit deep… way too deep for my liking. Even with the vintage pin to keep it from exposing too much… I feel I have to keep adjusting it all the time, and it makes me very self-conscious.
So, I’m trying to distract you here with a new statement necklace… But it might just make the whole thing worse. I mean, yeah, sure, let’s draw attention over here, so we won’t miss a thing if the pin gives out and I start spilling out of the dress…
I said it makes me feel self-conscious. And I’m sort of an ‘always expect the worst’ kind of girl to begin with…
That’s probably why I haven’t worn this dress as much as I though I would. I like my clothes not just low-maintenance but easy to wear: get dressed, move on to more important things, that sort of thing.
But the dress does look pretty with my new blue trench…
I’m wearing:
dress: Phase Eight (s/s 2014, seen previously HERE and HERE) / bolero: Debenhams (old) / necklace: Coast / vintage flower brooch from Portobello Road market / trench: Hobbs / sunglasses: Prada (old) / bag: Chanel / Shoes: Clarks (old)
Do you have clothes that makes you feel self-conscious?

I must admit I have a couple of things that never feel quite right, I think it is time for them to go. I agree with you on the colour and pattern but I see what you mean about the neckline , is it possible to either stitch it or add a press stud to keep it closed and save any possible mishaps. If all else fails it is great with the trench.
I think it's the deep V of the wrap style that I find problematic. I usually wear something under wrap dresses, but this is sort of a faux wrap… I guess I don't like layering, in general, and I though I would wear this dress in summer when it's hot. Oh well, need to experiment with it a bit, I guess.
Why don't you just hand stitch up the front neckline? I do that all the time. It takes 5 minutes and looks perfect. bisousSuzanne
That is a solution, I suppose… But I think the problem is the deep V neckline… I'm a bit of a prude when it comes to showing cleavage, even just a little bit, and would prefer a different type of neckline.
I think the dress is very beautiful, the printing is gorgeous. With fuchsia jacket, the outfit is perfect. The necklace is cute and neckline, in any case, it is too bold or ugly, I think it is beautiful and elegant.
Thanks. I guess I just don't like such a bold neckline, I would prefer to be a bit more covered up…
Tiina, I have similar problems with my wrap or false wrap dresses – too much exposure. I think I'll take Suzanne's and Jill's advice and just stitch them, it's maddening to readjust all the time. You look beautiful, the dress is hugging you so sensually, colors are great, it would be a pity to let it go.I also don't consider 1-2 years being old for my clothes, though I call them old in my blog just to differentiate from new purchases (within a year), which still can be found at stores. So for my readers, just for simplicity, I call it old, but since I have a lot of clothes/dresses now, and don't wear all of them all the time, they don't feel old. Those items I have for 5-7 years and more are old. 🙂
I usually wear a sleeveless top under wrap dresses, but this one is a faux wrap, and sleeveless… A sleeveless top underneath this dress would make me feel there are too many layers, somehow. I don't really like layering, or I prefer to have just a dress and a cardi, anything more is too much. Maybe I should try it with a long-sleeved top underneath?
I think it might work – try it! I've done it before – you can see here:http://inthewriterscloset.blogspot.com/2014/06/layer-it.htmlI also wanted to tell you that I enjoyed your interview so much! Congratulations on being featured, it feels wonderful, doesn't it? I hope you'll find even more appreciative readers too. I am sooo surprised to learn that you are turning 50. You look 10 years younger, such beautiful skin! WOW!
I really love the color and the wrap on you your necklace is stunning as well. I have several wrap dresses I want my seamstress to sew but I do the same thing with a pin 🙂 You look lovely! I think we all have those momentsThanks for linking up with Turning Heads Tuesday!jess xxwww.elegantlydressedandstylish.com
Thanks, Jessica.
It's so strange that I have the same dress, but never experienced feeling overexposed on top, but at the bottom. I think it's a bit short on me. The colours are so beautiful though, so I do still wear it. The new necklace is lovely, and a great colour with the magenta bolero. Maybe a bit of stitching, like the other ladies suggested, could change your feelings? It would be sad not to see you in these amazing colours?
I would love to see the dress on you! You would style it in a different way and it would look totally different, that would be so interesting! And yes, the dress sometimes feels a bit short. Or rather, it sort of creeps up a bit, especially when I wore it with tights, it drove me crazy!
The print of your dress is lovely! I usually wear a cami under a wrap dress but I know what you mean about layering. Maybe have it altered? Or you could wear it as a skirt, but that would be layering again 🙂 Thanks for linking up with Thursday Fashion Files!JillDoused In Pink
Thanks, Jill. The dress is sleeveless, so it feels really odd to wear a sleeveless cami underneath, too much fabric for my liking. I will need to experiment with this dress a bit, I guess…
I've just completed a major purging of my clothes. I took my time so there would be no regrets, but the deciding factor was close to your concern: If it made me feel self-conscious or I simply did not feel like "myself" in it, then OUT it went. Believe me, it was very therapeutic.
I'm usually very good at purging, and do it every spring. But this year I've been a bit lazy and unmotivated. I have box where I put clothes I'm not sure of, and this year I found myself sorting through last year's rejects and rescuing a few things because they 'deserve a second chance'! I really need to go shopping for some new stuff…
Either stitching or buying a fake cami to put underneath would work. I have the same problem for some dresses.
I think the real problem is that I would like the neckline to be completely different, not wraparound at all. Maybe round, or square neckline is more to my liking, but obviously this dress couldn't be altered that much.
Maybe you could find a cami or one of those summer lace bras to wear under it? I don't ever have cleavage problems (altho, I wish I did!), but I can see how it'd be hard to wear at work for that reason. I LOVE the necklace you paired with it!
Oh yes, work, wouldn't even dream of wearing this dress to work! It would be a bit of a distraction, to put it mildly…
I don't have any girls up top but I don't like deep v neck lines either and I usually just wear a pretty lace cami underneath dresses/tops that do have the neckline. If that doesn't suit you then I say donate it since it will make you uncomfortable all the time. I know there are other pieces in your closet that you love more. Thank you for joining TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you next week. Have a great weekend!Alicewww.happinessatmidlife.com
I usually wear camis, too, under wrap dresses. But this one is sleeveless and it feels a bit silly. Oh well, a good reason to go shopping for a new dress…
If the clothes make me feel self-conscious, I would not wear them. There is nothing worst than feeling unease in what you are wearing IMHO. But I do have old favorites that I keep wearing. There's this purple top that I wear all the time, the color is fading. I regret not buying more than 1. The irony is it cost nothing!
I agree. I have a few pieces that just sit unworn in my closet. I loved them when I bought them (colour or shape) but somehow they just didn't work in real life. And I stock up on favourite basics (t-hirts, cropped trousers…).
Have you tried Booba Tubes. I have them in white , black , black-and-white striped , and white lace. They are wonderful for those tops and dresses that are just a bit too revealing!
An interesting idea! I usually wear vests or camis under long-sleeved wrap dresses.
