First I’d like to say a big thank you to you all for the birthday congratulations in response to my last post. And yes, there was plenty of cake and enough champagne, and even a fancy birthday lunch in a nice restaurant the following day. Now that restaurants are open again (with proper social distancing measures), Professor M didn’t want to wait a moment longer to get a break from home-cooked (or take-away) meals. I can’t blame him: we both prefer eating to cooking, that’s for sure…
But let’s get to todays’ theme: minimalist style
You probably know by now that I like to call myself a minimalist, in the sense that I believe that ‘less is more‘ and ‘buy less but buy better‘ are much better mantras than ‘shop till you drop‘. In other words, I’m happy to splurge on something I know I will use and cherish for a long time.
But I also like the aesthetic side of minimalist style: bared-down functionality and clean lines. And when I see something that embodies minimalist style (which is not to be confused with minimalism as a lifestyle), I buy it. And in this case, that something was this bag:
Yes, Bag Lady strikes again… I wonder if there’s a support group for Bag Addicts Anonymous? Never mind…
Anyway… I thought (of course) that this bag would look just perfect with something very simple and casual. Like a navy and white striped top and a pair of navy linen trousers. How fortunate that I just happen to have something like that in my closet…
And this, my friend, is how a self-declared minimalist like me can justify buying yet another bag: it goes with 90% of the clothes I already have in my wardrobe. And, more importantly, it adds a little bit of sophistication to those rather plain and boring clothes that I wear most of the time…
Outfit details:
top: selected Femme (old) / trousers: Oska (old) / poncho: Marja Kurki /
shoes: Adidas / bag: Coccinelle / sunglasses: Dolce and Gabbana (old)

Thank you, Jill. It’s amazing how much we start missing these ordinary, everyday activities (like going shopping or having a meal in restaurant) when they are not available for a while, isn’t it?
Love that bag!

Thanks! I fell in love with it, too, the moment I saw it. And it was on sale!
I think that description of minimalism is also the very essence of Finnish style also, isn’t it? My style is definitely minimalistic in that way. I’d add sense of beauty to that description you wrote. As you said, you think that bag adds sophistication to your outfit. And you have a very good eye to add that aspect to your outfits with accessories or harmonious colours. But also I see, that the bag itself manifests all those aspects of minimalist style: it is functional, it has clean lines but it is also a beautiful as an object. I hope to see more outfits with that bag… -q

Thank you. Yes, I think you’re right, minimalism certainly plays a role in the Finnish (or Nordic / Scandi) style aesthetic. The whole idea of finding beauty in functionality, or creating functionality that is also beautiful is at the core of it.
And you will certainly see this bag many, many times, with so many outfits…
Great bag choice! I will go with everything, you are right!

Thank you, Lucy! And thanks for the invite!
Even a minimalist style requires great minimalist pieces. This bag is perfect for you.

Thanks, Nicole! Yes, finding just the right pieces is key, and even more important to get minimalist style right.
I wish I could buy less but buy better, I have good intentions but old habits are so darn hard to break. I love your new bag and wish you a very happy belated birthday!

I’m a very picky shopper: I seldom find anything I like, so buying less is easy. As for buying better… well, my husband says I have an expensive taste… He might be right.
It is a beautiful bag, Tiina! And it is perfect with your minimalist style. I am so glad that you got the chance to dine at a restaurant for your birthday! Thanks for sharing and linking up.

Yes, restaurants opened just in time for my birthday (with some restrictions, of course), and just in time for summer!
