Christmas Decoration

Christmas ornaments

Traditional, glitzy, vintage or modern?

What’s your Christmas decoration style? Do you bring out the bling, drown the tree in tinsel? Or do you carefully unwrap the vintage ornaments handed down from generation to generation?

My Christmas decoration is a bit of a hodgepodge of this and that: items my husband and I bought together at various Christmas markets mixed with old ornaments from our respective childhood homes. There is no theme, and I have to admit I put very little effort into decorating. Professor M, on the other hand… Well, let’s just say that if it wasn’t for me scaling back the ornaments, he’d probably have a Christmas tree in every room… But, as I need a tinsel-free zone, Christmas decoration is usually confined to a few rooms. Still, there are a few ornaments I look forward to seeing every Christmas. I thought I’d share a few of these with you.

There’s the vintage German decoration from my husband’s childhood home:

And both traditional and modern Finnish Christmas decoration:

And of course a bit of heavy metal just for fun:

What’s your Christmas decoration style?

Tiina

It's fun to see the way you like to decorate. Love the traditional and vintage ornaments! I wish I was the one who carefully unwraps all those family heirloom decorations, but alas, so many relocations so far away from my home… I do have a few beautiful glass ornaments my parents brought for me – one such a "toy" as we call them in Russian is my (older) brother's age. The rest is either hand-made (a few) or mass market, but looks like hand-made – fabrics, wood, paper, knit etc.

That sounds wonderful, Natalia. That's what Christmas decoration is all about: ornaments collected over the years, mementos reminding us of places or people… I'd rather have fewer ornaments that were carefully selected and mean something.

I love your beautiful local ornaments. Our tree is decorated with such a mish mosh of stuff and way too much of it. This year I packed up a bunch of the ornaments and donated them to war veteran families. We just kept a few of the very special family ones for our tree and it feels so nice.

A few special ones, that sounds lovely. I think most people's Christmas decoration is a bit of a 'mess', this and that, collected over the years. But that's what life is all about, a bit of this and that, and why shouldn't our Christmas decoration reflect the life we lead?

Wow, these are great. My style includes two types: things with sentimental value (e.g., trip-mementos; gifts from friends) and quirky stuff. I naturally gravitate toward quirky stuff, like an odd-looking, minion-dressed-as-elf cookie jar I bought today.

Quirky is good, it shows you don't take yourself too seriously. Besides, Christmas is supposed to be fun, isn't it?
