Loose, Fluid, Floaty…
That’s what I was thinking about when I put together this outfit. Maybe I’ve overdozed on 1920’s (or pretend-1920’s) imagery…
I blame Netflix. All those shows with sassy heroines cracking secrets and running around in loose, floaty clothes. Well, there’s Miss Fisher, of course. And Frankie Drake. And the Spanish show about telephone operators (just as fake as the other two, historically, but the clothes are to die for).
Anyway… I got obsessed with finding something slightly 20’s-inspired to wear. But rather than rushing out to buy a whole new wardrobe (as tempting as that is) of clothes I may or may not like, I thought I should see if I could put together something inspired by the 20’s (or pretend-20’s TV shows) first. With a contemporary twist, of course.
Which is another way of saying that whatever I manage to find in my wardrobe will have to do…
I don’t really want to dress like the characters in those shows. Yes, the clothes are beautiful, but I don’t want to look like I’m wearing a costume.
In other words, no fancy hats or headdresses. No small, round sunglasses or tiny handbags (cat eye sunglasses suit my face better and small handbags are just, well, useless…). This is real life. More importantly, this is my life. And I want to look like myself, not a character I’m playing.
This is why I decided to focus on one aspect of the 1920’s style only, and find a contemporary way of reinterpreting it.
In other words, loose cuts and floaty fabrics…
Which is easier said than done. I mean, loose styles are not exactly my staple. It might have something to do with the fact that while I may like 1920’s fashion, my body is made for more 1950’s styles…
And floaty fabrics… Well, again that’s something I tend to avoid.
So, what you’re seeing here is probably the two pieces of clothing in my entire wardrobe that could be described as ‘loose’ or ‘floaty’: an oversized, boxy trench coat and wide-leg trousers… Hmm, if I put those two together, does that create the loose, floaty silhouette I’m after?
