Cool Blue

how to look cool over 50

OK, we’ve all been there. Well, most of us. And it’s not the end of the world. OK, fine, maybe it is, but I’m hell bent on pretending it’s not.

I’m talking about the horrible moment when the trousers you were wearing just a few months ago suddenly don’t fit anymore…

I mean, what are you supposed to do about it? Other than lay off the chocolate, of course. Maybe actually get to the gym every once in a while. Well, that’s all very clear and simple, in theory… But before we get to the all-important lay-off-the-chocolate-and-get-your-expanding-butt-to-the-gym phase, there’s something even more important to do:

Well, that’s what I did, anyway.

The thing is, I’ve never been on a diet in my life. For most of my life I’ve been able to eat anything I want, as much as I want, without putting on weight. OK, the weight has been piling up a bit in the last 10-15 years… But my point is, I’ve never considered myself overweight, and never worried about not fitting into my clothes. Until now. So, I don’t know what the protocol is. This is all new to me, and something I thought was beyond the realm of possibility.

So, when my trousers (which I last wore in autumn) suddenly felt too tight, I really freaked out. As in this-can’t-be-happening-oh-my-God-why-me freaked out. And then I swore never to touch a piece of chocolate again. Yeah, that lasted a few hours… and then I gobbled up all the chocolate I could get my hands on. You know, being depressed and all…

But I finally pulled myself together, put on the only (well, almost) pair of jeans that fits comfortably and decided that I may not be slim but I can still be cool…

So, this is me, not putting on a brave face, but giving you my best don’t-I-look-cool impression.

As for the unwanted weight gain… I’m still in the freaking out phase, don’t know what the protocol is and still self-medicating with chocolate… HELP!!!

mwahaha, you really look cool, and I love your attitude! You look fabulous in your striped shirt and blue coat, and your accessorizing rocks!!, that scarf is cool!!I'm not used to 'diets', as I think that they're not good in the long term, I prefer to keep on moving, and discard any bad habit which I could acquired recently. Obviously, eating a little piece of chocolate is not a bad habit (and it was not a recently acquired habit anyway!)besosbesos

If it was only a little piece of chocolate…. I think I'm a chocoholic: leave a box of chocolate on the table and I eat all of it. Immediately.

I subscribe to the FREAK OUT attitude all the way! Hahaha. Well put. You do put on a brave face. This winter was brutal here. I haven't bought junk food for a couple of weeks – if it's not there I can't eat it – which is always my first step, and now if I am feeling peckish I eat a big, cold dill pickle. It satisfies my craving very well.

Yes, I have the same idea: I can't keep chocolate at home because I will eat it. Only healthy food in the fridge…

Yes we've all been there Tiina!! I'm the same, but always have done so form of exercise which kept me fairly trim, since stopping for various reasons last year, I've put on half a stone! Can I shift it? No!! I love my food – all food, and drink!! You look fabulous btw, and only you know how you feel,

Oh yes, exercise… my body definitely needs that, but my mind needs persuading. There's a gym 5 minutes from where I live, and it takes a lot of will power to get there a couple of times a week…

Haha, but what would we do without Chocolate! Just dat a lot of lettuce during the week and get out of the roof in the weekend!…….I know I do….

Any diet must contain chocolate and wine or it's doomed to fail, that's my opinion. And depriving yourself certainly won't work. No, healthy food and moderate amounts of chocolate, maybe that works…

You look terrific and of course we can't see a few extra pounds! I agree with Mel about keeping the sweets out of the house for a few weeks, and you'll likely lose the weight without stress. Thanks for sharing, xox-Patti

Oh yes, i can't have any chocolate in the house, that's for sure (I'm not in the least bit interested in any other sort of sweets, though). I guess there comes a time when a girl just has to start watching what she eats…

My tried and true "diet" which is not really a diet but a lifestyle, is the South Beach diet…basically high protein, low carb— when I really hit it hard, it's guaranteed to work, for me. However, the big 6-0 looms in my future (in two months, to be exact!) and I have to say, it brings a certain freedom with it. I have by no means thrown in the towel! I go to the gym, don't really have the appetite I use to and have lost my sweet tooth in my fifties. My indulgences are a glass (or two) of red wine in the evening and the occasional piece of dark chocolate. And, you know what?…while I am still very interested in looking my best for my age, I WILL NOT be concerned about working on my "bikini body" for the summer! Ha! LOVING IT!!!! "Life is short, take the trip, buy the shoes, eat the cake." (in moderation)!

Oh yes, we need a more relaxed attitude as far as looks are concerned, for sure. I just want to fit into my clothes, comfortably, and maybe feel a bit more energetic. But I'm certainly not ready to give up wine and chocolate!

I'm sure that your determination will rid of those few ponds Tina. You still look really good here though. Love the Blue coat, I'm a huge Jaeger fan.Thank you for linking up to Celebrating

My determination tends to wane every time when I see some chocolate, unfortunately…

Yea, that is no fun At All. I am not too thrilled with how pieces of my wardrobe are feeling too tight, as well. Blah. I recently joined an on-line fitness group and it has really been keeping me motivated to workout and stay on top of clean eating. You have to post at least once a day and that keeps me accountable. Left to my own devices I don't do so well. Thanks so much for linking up with Fabulous Friday! Also, I am currently looking for co-hosts, so I hope you will consider the opportunity.

That sounds good. Yeah, I guess I could use some accountability in that respect, too. I tend to get a bit lazy left to my own devices…

Based on my own experience, there is no such a thing like a quick diet to loose weight. It is more like lifestyle where you eat moderately every day, regularly exercise and leave a wine a chocolate for a weekend. As far as your outfit, I really like your cool blue style, Tiina

Yes, unfortunately you're right, there are no quick fixes… It's just that I've never been on a diet. For most of my life (when I was young, that is) I've been able to eat whatever I want…
