Wardrobe Experiments 1: Cute vs Attitude

summer skirt

“It looks like kitchen curtains”

That was the first impression this skirt made on my husband… But I liked it. It reminds me of the cute gingham summer dresses my mother used to wear. So, in a way the skirt evoked some happy childhood memories…

And it has pockets! And it allows free movement! It’s practical!

So, the skirt appeals to me on both emotional and rational level, and in my book that’s good enough a reason to get it. Hubby will get used to it.

The only problem is that I don’t do cute. It’s just not me. I blame all those frilly dresses I had to wear as a child, and a lifetime of being told to look pretty… Besides, anyone who knows me would describe me as terminally sarcastic, drawn to pessimism, and a bit of loose cannon when it comes to politically incorrect opinions. In other words, definitely not cute

So, I needed to add a bad-ass t-shirt to balance the outfit out. After all, I wouldn’t want to misrepresent myself…

Outfit details:

skirt: Zara / t-shirt: Mango (old) / bag: Furla /

shoes: Clarks / sunglasses: Marimekko

So, what do you think of this outfit: kitchen curtains, too cute, or too much attitude?

Let me know in the comments.

Tiina

PS: I want to thank debwlv for the very kind comment on an old post. I tried to publish it and accidentally deleted it instead… Should not try to do these things on the iPhone, I guess… Anyway, that was a very sweet comment, and it made me very happy.

Tiina, I think you did an excellent styling here – love this skirt especially with such a contrasting top! Perfect balance to suit your personality!

I find your aversion to cute to be interesting. Not sure I understand it but it fascinates me. The skirt is nice and needs no justification; if you like it, wear it. Glad to hear you don't take fashion advice from men. 🙂

Well, I probably had the childhood wardrobe you wanted: pastel colours, pretty dresses and frills and bows… I think I simply overdosed on all that stuff.

I love contrasts in an outfit! Next week I post an outfit wearing the perfect tee for you! But I love this skirt, the whole look is something I would love to wear!

I almost bought that skirt yesterday when I popped in to Zara. I ended up buying another skirt but if I'd known it had pockets I'd probably have bought it! I liked the dress in the same pattern too. I didn't have much time to browse or try things so I'll have to go back. I love the graphic t-shirt!Emma xxx http://www.style-splash.com

Yes, I think it was the pockets that sold it to me. There's a dress, too??!!

Yes a short sleeved, slightly flared shirt dress. I think bizarrely it was about £10 cheaper than the skirt, if my memory serves me correctly.

I really like your your combination here Tiina. Yes, the skirt could be too cutsey with a different top and not your style at all.Wear it your way because you like it and it suits you .
