Transitioning from summer to autumn
Well, so far these early autumn days have been rather mild and (mostly) sunny, so the ‘autumn‘ part of this outfit is limited to long sleeves. Of course, I wear long sleeves (i.e. cardigans) on cooler summer days, too. But wearing a long-sleeved top is a completely different thing. Psychologically, that is.
Yes, it’s all in my head. That a long-sleeved top means autumn whereas a cardigan is for summer, I mean. The way I see it, a cardigan is something you can put on when it gets a bit cooler and take off when you don’t need it anymore. It’s optional, a temporary add-on, whereas a long-sleeved top requires a bigger commitment: it means admitting it’s cold enough to wear something a bit warmer all day. You can’t just take it off. At least not in public.
So, that’s my concession to acknowledging the inevitable. Yes, it’s September. The weather is getting cooler (though far from cold), especially in the evenings. But at least I’m not wearing a coat. Or socks. And I’m wearing my summer trousers. There, that’s putting autumn in its place!
So, it’s not cold weather that’s making me look a bit stiff in these photos. When we took these photos I had been suffering from back pain for a few weeks, which made me rather restricted in my movements.
But I’ll be damned if I let a little thing like back pain keep me from doing what I want! I was perfectly able to walk; it was sitting down (and getting up) that was difficult. And bending, and reaching for something, and…
OK, so working was a bit of a challenge, being on my feet all day (because sitting down at my desk was a bit risky, you know, in case I might not be able to get up again…). And the daily commute was a bit uncomfortable, what with having to stand on the train. But (uncharacteristically for me) I decided to find the silver lining: I usually spend way too much time being inactive, hunched over my desk or lying on the sofa. At least I got some exercise walking and standing…
Although I have to admit that now that my back is better, I’m actually rather enjoying camping out on the sofa watching Netflix…

I love your Autumn top Tiina and agree cardis are part of the summer wardrobe – certainly here in England. Sorry to hear about your back pain – urgh that’s rough! I hope you have recovered. Good on you for getting this post out! xx Maria
Thanks, Maria. I think I have recovered, but it took a while.
I live in the S of France and so I’m looking forward to wearing my Autumn/Winter clothes, which are pretty much the same thing here as we rarely get very cold weather. I’m new to your post and I really enjoy reading it especially your ‘political’ comments. BTW what height are you, if it’s not too personal? I’m a chubby 163 cms and I have to imagine what I might look like in certain styles. Keep up the inspiration!
Thank you Flora! It’s always nice to hear from readers. I’ve never been particularly interested in politics, until recently. It’s just that with everything going on in the world at the moment, I feel very strongly that people like me can’t afford to be indifferent anymore. And I’m just completely freaking out, reading about politics these days. But because I’m not much of an activist, I do what I do best: let my sarcastic side loose.
Oh, and I’m 162 cm tall (or short).
I love this outfit, Tiina! It’s fantastic – the colors, the prints, so wonderfully put together! I agree about cardigan vs. sweaters! I rarely wear sweaters just for that reason – I can get too hot, and there is not much I can do about it. I guess they don’t call them sweaters for nothing. :)))
I am glad to hear you are feeling better! and that you found some usefulness even in being not your 100% – it’s definitely a skill.
Congratulations on your new blog style and platform!! How is it working for you so far? Any benefits in switching from Blogger? I’m a bit clueless about all that!
Thanks, Natalia!
I’m still getting used to WordPress, ironing out the kinks etc. Some readers have reported that they can now comment on the blog whereas previously they couldn’t. That’s definitely a good thing. I’m still trying to figure out how everything works, though. I’m a bit clueless when it comes to IT, too.
You look stunning. Your pants are awesome! Great styling! Thanks for sharing your post at the Top of the World Style linkup party.
Thanks Nicole. These pants have been my (surprise) favourite this summer. And as it’s still quite warm, I will keep wearing them for a while still.
Ha ha–I’m right with you on long sleeves vs. cardigans, isn’t that funny?! I love your color mix of burgundy, warm brown and leopard. We have very similar tastes (and attitudes ;)). Your sunnies and lip color really add to the overall look, too. Have a great weekend!
Thanks, Kim. It’s funny, isn’t it, with these attitudes? I know it’s (mostly) just in my head, but it really seems somehow ‘easier’ to wear a cardigan. Have a great weekend!
Ha-ha, I love the irony that now your back is feeling better you can lay on the couch again. 🙂 Also love the polka dots and leopard combo. Lise
Thanks, Lise. Yes, irony… I guess it was my body telling me to get off my lazy butt and get more active. Or stretch more, or something.
Oh I love your trousers Tiina! I’ve got a pair in boring navy, but yours really are a picture. Great styling for Autumn. Jacqui Mummabstylish
Thanks, Jacqui. These trousers have become a surprise favourite this past summer. I’ve worn them so many times, and with everything.
Poor thing with your bad back. I am glad it is getting better. You are quite a trooper to be commuting and standing on your feet all the time.
As for the outfit: great. I would never have thought of combining top and trousers but they are so good together.
Greetje
Thanks. It’s sort of a recurring problem: this wasn’t the first time and it probably won’t be the last… I guess it’s my body’s way of telling me to slow down. Or get some exercise.
Tiina, I do like your easing into Autumn outfit. I am the same as you and think of cardigans more for cooler Summer days. I forgot to mention that I do like your new blog layout and note that it is from Pigdig. Did you change from blogger and did they do it for you? I am interested as it is something I know I will do eventually.
Thanks, Jill.
I had Pipdig migrate the blog from Blogger to WordPress, it was less stressful that way. There are a few little tweaks here and there I still need to do, but for the most part I’m happy with the new layout.
I love those trousers!
Thanks!
They’ve become a surprise favourite of mine, too.
I love your dotty trousers! They look fabulous with the burgundy sweater and the gold shoes! I suffer with back problems too so I know how painful it can be. It’s that moment when you get up after sitting for a while and realise you can’t straighten up. Glad to hear it’s now improving for you. Thanks for linking up!

Oh yes, back problems, that’s it. Can’t straighten up. Or can’t get up. Either way, it makes life difficult.
Thanks, Emma.
