The Power of Accessories, part 2

40+ winter style

And we’re back with our little travel wardrobe experiment…

Remember, creating different looks with a limited set of bulky items (= a coat, a bag, a pair of shoes), some basics and small, lightweight accessories. So, I’m wearing the same coat, shoes and a bag as in the previous post. The coat is still pale (almost as pale as me), so a colourful scarf is a must once more. But I want this look to have a bit more attitude, be cool and hip, as befits a walk in Notting Hill and Portobello Road.

40+ smart casual

This is a smart casual look, so I’m wearing jeans and my favourite stripy top. I’ve shown it on the blog many times before… I actually listed the posts at the end of this one. And I know this goes against my minimalist aspirations, but I sometimes buy certain items in bulk. And this top, I have three of them. Yes, the exact same style and colour… No, we’re still not discussing my neuroses. I prefer to see them as quirks…

40+ winter style

I am wearing:

coat: Marks and Spencer (autumn-winter 2014), seen before HERE / scarf: Alexander McQueen (old), seen before HERE / bag and sunglasses: Chanel / wristwarmers: Brora (old), seen before HERE / top: Banana Republic (old), seen before so many timesHEREHEREHERE, and HERE / jeans: Levis’s Bold Curve straight leg (old), seen before HERE

This  pale blue coat has now been featured on the blog 3 times:

how to accessorize

And I’m sure you will see it again…Which of these 3 looks do you prefer?

Do you like creating new looks by changing your accessories ?

I love your Alex McQ's scarf! The color is stunning.. beats my black and white (well, can't complain, it's a gift) Now choosing my favorite is tough but I would definitely go with the first one. I love the color combination, clean line and the elegance of it. Suits you really well and make you look so posh!

Thanks, dear. I kind of like the idea of looking posh… I seem to collect these scarves, I have quite a few…

I like all the three! You do such a wonderful job accessorizing – and yes, I like doing that too. Sometimes just one detail changes a look completely. This scarf is so fun, and I just love your gloves!Nothing wrong with buying the stuff you like in the amount you want. 🙂 xxx

Thanks, Natalia! Well, the idea behind buying multiples was that I would then have my favourite tops in both of my homes, no need to carry them back and forth. The problem is they never stay where they were supposed to but seem to learn to travel on their own…

I'm with Natalia, all three look great as they are all so different, all so ladylike as befits the wearer. Our quirks are what makes us interesting I say.

Thanks, Jill. 'Ladylike', wow, that's something I always aspire to but secretly fear I can't pull off. Maybe I'm learning…

Definitely the third. Love the mix of patterns. It's that casual chic look that I love and that you do so expertly. Love the way the coat is left open and you're looking up and forward LIKE "Watch out, world. Here I come!"

Thanks, Marea! I love casual chic, and it's so attainable, with minimal effort. And wearable, too, everyday.

Love the shade of blue in your scarf and your gloves are such fun! Stripes are so in right now as well, the whole ensemble looks great!

Thanks. I like stripes, in fact I think I can't resist them (so many stripy tops…), but I don't often mix them with other prints, so this was a a bit of a departure for me.

LOL…me too I like calling lots of my character traits, quirks : ) Plus it makes me interesting. Or at least that is what I tell myself. I like the sign you're pointing to. I need that in my office.I'm not one for changing up my accessories when I travel, but you've shown how it should be done here. I do adore that coat, especially the colour. bisousSuzannehttp://www.suzannecarillo.com

They had other great signs, too, it's s shop that sells nothing but signs. Portobello Road is full of quirky shops like that.I guess I started experimenting with changing my accessories simply out of necessity and convenience: it is easier to pack 5-6 scarves than the same number of coats…

I love all three looks but the third scarf is doing it more for me. The coat looks great on you Tiina. Enjoy your week. xo

Thanks, Elsie! It's a very versatile coat (which in my book is always a plus), which is perfect as I like to vary my look with accessories. One day I feel a bit more classic, another day I need a more rock and roll vibe…
