The Darker Side of Red

Red is my colour

Always has been, probably always will. And by ‘my colour’ I mean that I like it, and it looks good on me. Well, most shades of red suit me, anyway. However, I usually go for either fuchsia or tomato red.

But it’s only since the past few years that I’ve been experimenting with the darker shades of red. And therefore you’ve seen me wear lots of plum and berry tones, over and over again. However, these are ‘safe’ colours, in a way, as they’re blue-red, and I know they’re flattering on my skin tone. Yet, I’m getting a bit bored with my blue-red comfort zone…

So, I’ve been experimenting with something a bit more unusual (for me, that is). And this is how burgundy has been working its way into my wardrobe, slowly but consistently. And yes, this is a major step outside of my comfort zone.

You see, for most of my life I’ve been avoiding anything ‘brownish’ like the plague, thinking that these colours are either dull or make me look sickly. And this is why burgundy has been on my no-no list. Until now.

Sure, I’ve had weird colour crushes before (the hot pink faux fur coat and lime green tunic in my twenties come to mind… No, there are no pictures). So, I guess it was just a matter of time something ‘brownish’ would end up on my ‘experimental outfit’s list. But the more I look at the pictures of myself wearing something burgundy, the more I think that this particular colour crush has the potential to turn into a passionate, life-long love affair.

Now, I’m old enough to know when I crave a particular colour just for the sake of novelty. And I’m smart enough to avoid spending too much money on clothes in weird colours because I know that the crush of the moment, like all crushes, will eventually pass.

However, now it’s beginning to look as if I’m on a burgundy spending spree: not content buying cheap and cheerful t-shirts but items with more longevity, such as a poncho or the  knitted top you see here. But when I start fantasizing about a burgundy bag, that’s when I know that this colour is for keeps…

This colour really suits you and it looks great mixed with the pink, purple and red in your accessories. For years I avoided burgundy because it was part of my school uniform but now I really like it. Thanks for linking up!Emma xxxwww.style-splash.com

Thanks, Emma. I've admired burgundy on other people for years, but I used to think it was too dark or too brown for me. Oh well, live and learn…

Well sometimes there's a good reason to avoid a particular colour, of course, but it's good to experiment a bit. Thanks, Jill.

Thanks, Jodie. Yes, colour crushes, they hit you out of the blue. I've had some really weird crushes. But luckily I keep getting back to old favourites, eventually.
