On Winter, and bears…

When does winter start?

I suppose that depends on your definition of winter. You know, what you consider cold enough to qualify as ‘winter weather’, or whether snow is a prerequisite for your definition of winter.

But I think it’s safe to say December is definitely a winter month in the Northern Hemisphere, wherever you are.

For me,  it’s the diminishing daylight that signals the start of winter. At the moment we have about 6 hours of daylight: from about 9 am till just after 3 pm. Of course, come January, the days will start getting longer fast, but winter won’t be over until April…

And snow… Well, that comes and goes. As I’m writing this, it’s snowing. Just a bit: there is a thin layer of powdery white snow on everything. However, it will be gone by tomorrow morning, when this post goes live.

Anyway, it’s getting cold, so it’s time to get out the winter coats. Yes, I said coats, as in plural. Did I mention that winter lasts (at least) till April? There’s no way I could possibly get through winter with just one coat. Especially since you need a different coat for a 0ºC (= 32ºF) weather than for a -10ºC (= 14ºF) weather… In case you’re wondering, it was just above freezing when these pictures were taken.

I’m a bear

You know those tests asking you what animal you’d be? Well, as much as I would like to be one of those gracious, mysterious or gorgeous animals everyone in in awe of, there’s an animal that’s a better match to my personality. Yes, I would definitely be a bear.

Why? Well, for starters, I’m usually in a bad mood when I wake up… And because in winter, all I want to do is hibernate. Not literally, of course, but metaphorically. I find it very difficult to motivate myself into going out. I swear, if I didn’t have to go to work, I would just stay indoors till April…

I don’t like winter: I hate the cold, I hate the snow, and I especially hate the darkness. And yes, I know, I was born in Finland, and I should be used to all of the above. And I am. Used to it, I mean. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. As far as I’m concerned, winter is just the long, tedious period between autumn and summer (I hate spring almost as much as I hate winter).

Besides, I’m a bear. I just want to hibernate (= slouch on the sofa doing nothing) when it’s too cold and dark.

Firstly, your coats are really fab (all of them) which makes Winter more bearable for sure. And you look cool and comfy in this ‘red wine’ color with the blue scarf and blush pink bag!. I love your accessorizing style!
And you always put a smile on my face with your writting, particularly when I read your opinions about winter and that you hate spring almost as much as you hate winter. I could wear this quote printed on a t-shirt! ;DD
Here it’s damn strange that temperatures go under -5ºC, so most of the time weather is not that bad and winter delays until Xmas. Definitely, Autumn is my favourite season, even now that it’s fading quickly into darker days.
    besos

Thank you! Yes, winter is tolerable (as long as you don’t have to go out), but spring… I don’t know which is worse, the sunshine-one-day-snow-the-next weather or the pollen everywhere. I would happily skip both winter and spring and just have eternal autumn (not too keen on hot weather, either).

Oh yes. Well, all things warm, for sure. I’ll pass on the layers…

I agree: I would rather just take a few snapshots of winter and move on to spring. Unfortunately, I have about 3-4 months of being ankle-deep in snow to look forward to…

Thanks! Well, I guess I’m used to it. The lack of daylight, I mean. It does affect me, though. But then we’ll have the 18 hours or so of daylight in summer to look forward to. So, it’s a trade-off in a way.

Thanks, Nicole. Burgundy is one of my favourite colours at the moment.
