how to accessorise

I love my accessories

I don’t have a huge wardrobe. In fact, I keep wearing the same pieces most of the time. And when I go shopping (less often than you’d think), I tend to buy something very similar to what I already have.

And you know what, I like that. I like having sort of a seasonally appropriate ‘uniform’ that is practical and suits my lifestyle.  And I’d be happy if my wardrobe could fit into one small(fish) suitcase. That would make life so much simpler. Have less, live more, that sort of thing.

But accessories are my downfall. There’s always a new bag, a pair of gloves, or (my all time favourite) sunglasses to covet.

So, I’m trying to be sensible and only buy what I really, really love. Why? Well, for several reasons. First, because I don’t have unlimited funds (and as a freelancer, my income can fluctuate quite a bit). Second, I don’t have unlimited storage space. And I already have way too much stuff cluttering our small(ish) flat. And third, I hate the wastefulness of always acquiring new things.

I think we should celebrate craftsmanship, appreciate good quality items, and actually wear and use the stuff we spend our hard-earned cash on.

And for that reason, every single piece I’m wearing here is old (except the coat) and has been featured on the blog before.

What about you? How big (or small) a wardrobe do you have?

And do you try to limit your accessories collection, too, like me?

I’m an accessories person too. And they do take up space I agree.

If only I had more closet space… Or maybe downsizing is the answer.

Even if my wardrobe is as massive as my love for clothes and variety, I also love to wear my ‘uniforms’ and simplify my life. And I totally agree on wearing the clothes we have, enjoy them, restyling instead of buying.
I’m loving your coat and all the fabulous accessories. Quality pieces always enhance an outfit!. Your bag and gloves have a fantastic color, so amazing!, and you look fabulous!

Thank you, that’s so sweet of you.
In my effort to buy less, I give myself permission to get really special accessories (but not too often, obviously), so that I would want to take good care of them and keep them forever (and thus buy less in the long run). Still, there’s always something new that seems to call my name…

I have way too many tops/sweaters! Some of them I have donated while switching over to the winter clothes this Fall but I still have a lot. I seem to gravitate towards them while out shopping. Your accessories are really pretty. Love the color of the bag and gloves. I had a collection of Coach bags which my ex-boss’s wife would buy me every holiday. I donated a lot of them because they seemed outdated. I now have room on the shelf and can see what I actually own! I don’t have as many scarves as you (or quality ones like cashmere), but I do have a bag of them which I wear quite often. Your cashmere scarf is lovely! Gotta go look for one! Arlene from US (NJ)

You can’t go wrong with a cashmere scarf. It’s a must-have in winter. I have very sensitive skin, so wool doesn’t work for me (too itchy), thus I only buy cashmere sweaters and scarves for winter. But they last forever if you take good care of them.

My wardrobe has stages – almost worn out = dog walks/cleaning days – brand new = blog only. Then there are stages in-between! I have outfit ideas hanging out ready. My poor husband puts up with it so valiantly xx Maria

Wow, you are organised! I usually just put something together whenever my husband is here to take some blog photos. And even if I have some sort of an idea to begin with, I usually change my mind at the last minute and end up wearing something totally different (or, rather, the weather makes me change my mind, I should say…)

I totally agree that we should only buy what we love and will wear for years. I have always admired your classy accessories, they are a true investments . I rather like that coat too , a must for your Winters.

Thanks, Jill. Although the coat is more for autumn, it’s not warm enough for winter when the temperature dips below zero.

I completely agree with you about buying only what we really love and know we will use over and over again. Like you, I’m a freelancer and now have no space for new stuff…and I find it so hard to get rid of anything! I love your red bag and gloves, and your coat is beautiful! Thanks for linking up!

Thanks, Emma. Yes, getting rid of stuff is so difficult. That’s going to be my new project next year: decluttering…
