Minimalist Chic

My love affair with minimalist gold-tone accessories continues…

OK, the earrings are probably the anti-thesis of minimalism: you see them a mile away… Yet, these are the most comfortable, easy-to-wear earrings I have. They’re rose-gold leather, so they weigh nothing. I bought them in Berlin years ago, in a small shop selling items by local designers.

And the first thing I did was break them, on purpose. I do that with all ‘fashion earrings’: I always take the hooks off and just hang the earrings from my own white gold hoops instead. Why would I do something like that, you might ask… Well, as it happens, I have a very bad nickel allergy. Yes, I know: any jewellery sold in the EU should be nickel-free, but I prefer not to take any chances. I seldom wear even silver earrings; for me, it’s either old or white gold.

But let’s talk about this outfit. As you may have guessed, this is one of those ‘walking-in-the-neighbourhood’ outfits: it’s not like I need to dress up to go to a park.

Anyway…  the striped jersey dress has quickly become a favourite: it goes with anything and can be styled up or down. It’s sleeveless, so I usually wear a cardigan or a linen shirt over it (to protect my delicate skin from burning in the sun, or to keep warm, depending on the weather). This is about as much layering as I can take: a cardigan or a shirt over a sleeveless dress. It’s also very practical, given the unpredictable weather we’ve been having lately.

And that’s the essence of minimalist style for me: clothes that are easy to wear, uncomplicated and comfortable. Clothes you can forget about after you put them on and just get on with your life.

Thanks, Jacqui. It’s the most versatile dress I have, and I’ve worn it almost non-stop all summer.

Thanks! These are probably my favourite earrings for summer; they always add a little pizzazz to any outfit.

Great tip on fashion earrings for anybody with allergies, but also when fashion earrings have annoying hooks.

Thanks! Yes, accessories definitely make a difference. In my case, they often make the entire outfit…

I love the earrings. I have a reaction to nickel too, Also rhodium. I can wear gold, sterling silver and surgical steel only. Sometimes if I coat the offensive earring with clear nail polish it helps. Your idea of using the same safe hoops is great, I will try that. Minimalist style to me looks just like your style; classic with an interesting ‘tidbit’ added, usually in the form of accessories.

Thanks! I’ve heard of that nail polish trick. And apparently there’s even a special product for that purpose (it works on other jewellery, too). But it seems like a bit too much work in my opinion, that’s why I ended up using the ‘safe’ hoops with everything. It’s also the lazy woman’s option: all you have to do is dangle the earring from the hoop and you’re good to go. That’s me: always looking for the easiest way out…

Tiina, I love this outfit! I am all about maxi dresses right now and this one is so good and so versatile. I love the lavender cardigan on you. And your earrings are magnificent! So very pretty. I also have a nickel allergy so I must be careful with fashion jewelry as well. Even ones marked nickel free are not always so! Thanks for linking up!

      Thanks!
Maxi dresses are so practical in summer, aren’t they? They provide some much-needed sun protection, and they’re great if the weather turns colder, too.
