Minimalist Accessories

casual weekend wear over 50

Life’s been a bit busy lately, and I’ve had trouble keeping up with the blog (among other things). But that’s how it is when you’re a freelancer: either you have barely any work or you have so much work you have no time for anything else…

Anyway… these photos are from last week, when we had a bit of a cold snap. Actually, they were taken the day after the summery photos in my last post… Yep, that’s how fast the weather can change. But, lucky for us, we’re back on track towards warmer weather now (= double-digit temperatures again).

But let’s talk about accessories

You know how much I love my accessories, don’t you? However, in keeping with my minimalist ethos, I’m determined to buy less but buy better when it comes to accessories, too. This means buying only what I love, and wearing it forever.

You might think this rules out impulse purchases, but it’s actually the opposite. Whenever I’m trying to fill a need, i.e. go shopping to find something that is missing in my wardrobe, I come back empty-handed. I know exactly what I want, and that’s the problem: it doesn’t exist.

But when I’m not looking for anything in particular (i.e. ‘just browsing‘), I occasionally (though not very often) come across something I really like. More importantly, I know that I’ll also wear it. And that’s why I should get it, then and there. Because if I don’t, chances are it won’t be there anymore when I come back for it a day or two later (been there, done that). So, I’ve learned to trust my intuition, and allow myself some impulse purchases every now and then.

And this little white crossbody bag is my latest impulse purchase. Something about it just resonated with me. For starters, I thought it would be just perfect for those holiday sightseeing walks. You know, when you need something to keep your valuables safe but definitely don’t want to carry anything heavy or bulky.

My only regret is that I didn’t get the slightly bigger version (which would fit the case for my sunglasses). Oh well, I think the smaller version might be better on a hot day, with loose clothes. Besides, the less stuff I have to carry, the better. That’s also part of my new everyday minimalism: less baggage, in both the literal and metaphorical sense…

I am bringing my smallest crossbody bag on our trip at the end of the month: only the essentials will fit. Granted I might have one of the boys carry a backpack with all the non essential lol!
I like this white one you found!

I know what you mean: a small bag is so nice, but it’s also great to have a hubby with a backpack…

I love the crossbody bag. Love your shoes too! I have in the past bought things on impulse and regretted it afterwards. It probably was a day when I was shopping for nothing in particular (browsing) and just happened upon an item I thought I’d like but then either never wore it or returned it. I’m glad you have better luck than I do. Arlene from NJ

      Thanks, Arlene.
Yes, impulse shopping is a bit tricky. It works for me when I’m really not looking for anything. Or even browsing (because when you’re browsing, you’re sort of prepared to buy something, or hoping that you’ll find something). I often find something when I just happen to pass a shop: I see something in the shop window, like it, and buy it. I’m serious: I’ve made some of my best purchases this way, in 5 minutes.

I love this cute bag, it looks elegant and versatile!. It’s totally my kind of bag when going out for a walk in holidays, keeping my valuables safe, as you said, and keeping my back and shoulder safe too!. You look comfy, stylish and fabulous! and your shoes are particularly cool!

      Thanks!
Oh yes, that’s an important point: your back and shoulders thank you for a lighter load. I always carry a big tote bag on work days, so on holiday I really enjoy ‘travelling light’.
The shoes have the iconic Marimekko ‘Unikko’ (= poppy) print (which is older than I am), and they’re from last summer. Really comfy, too, with super thick soles. Marimekko always features these shoes in their collections, always with a different print or colours, so they’re available year round on their website.
