Life Lately: January

currently
Can you believe it, January is almost over!

Where did the time go?

Well, first I got back to work after a very nice holiday. With the inevitable post-holiday flu, of course. And when I was finally over that, I hurt my back. Nothing serious, just lumbago. Which in my case is a recurring problem. In other words, this isn’t the first and it certainly won’t be the last time I have to suffer through it.

However, suffering from back pain for the past couple of weeks meant that as I wasn’t really able to sit, a lot of the things I normally do – such as editing pictures and blogging – were a bit challenging, or nearly impossible. Thankfully, I have no trouble standing up or walking, provided I avoid sudden movements or bending sideways. Oddly enough, bending forward seems to be no problem at all…

So, instead of sitting down working on my computer or watching TV I have been busy with projects that I can fit around the back pain. Such as tidying up the entire flat and tossing out all the crap that has been accumulating in the closets.

Yes, I’ve caught the KonMari bug, too… I binge-watched the new Marie Kondo show on Netflix, got the book, and have been clearing out closets with the fervour and enthusiasm of a recent convert…

Still, there are a few nooks and crannies left in the flat that are (literally) out of my reach. I learned this the hard way as I was about to get on the stepladder, and the back pain quickly reminded me that it might not be such a good idea…

Anyway…

The fact is that I’m incapable of following any sort of instructions, so it’s probably not a huge surprise that I’ve taken a few shortcuts and made some modifications of my own. And the process is far from over. But maybe that’s a topic better left for another blog post…

How was your January?

Sorry to hear you’ve had some back pain and haven’t been able to do your usual activities but it’s great that you were able to find something to do and got some decluttering done! 🙂

Hope that your week is going well and your back is feeling better 🙂

Thank you. The back is getting better, slowly, and my decluttering is progressing nicely, too.

Back pain in the worst. I hope you are starting to feel better now.

Smart that you were able to get stuff done while having that issue. I tried to watch some of her show but the state of the houses where people were living bothered me too much. What the heck? Why were they holding onto to so much crap? Lots of them looked like hoarders. I couldn’t live in a place like that.

Thanks, Suzanne. Yes, back pain is the worst, it affects everything you do. I haven’t been on sick leave or anything, but I’ve had to be quite careful and avoid sudden movements.
Oh yes, the people in the Marie condo show… everyone has enormous houses to begins with, and yet they still can’t organise their crap?!? It made me feel like a super organised neat freak in comparison…

sorry to hear about your back pain, it’s so disgusting not being able to bend nor sit on your computer!. At least you can walk! and took the most of the situation by decluttering your wardrobe!
I’ve been admiring the Mary Kondo ideas and all the neatness, but haven’t feel concerned because I love to be a maximalist. But a very tidy one!

Thanks! Yes, I was able to talk and stand or lie down. Just sitting down was a problem (or getting up). So, I was able to work, I just had to be on my feet all day.
I found the Marie condo show inspiring. I’m a minimalist at heart, but one that seems to be storing a lot of crap I could do without. And I certainly needed to organise my stuff better. It’s still a work in progress, though.

Hope your back feels better soon! Like others said, at least you were able to do something other than just lying around. I read the Marie Kondo book when it first came out and have actually adopted some of the clothes folding methods. It gave me more room in the dresser drawers and I can see everything I have. I haven’t seen the show yet. My daughter has been watching it and she’s been organizing her home. She’s always been an organizer though so I don’t know if the show brought that out in her again. It must feel good to clear certain things out and sit back (in your case, stand back) and see the progress. Arlene from NJ

Thanks, Arlene. Yes, slowly getting better. But I think I need to start doing some sort of exercise (again, and more frequently than previously) to prevent this problem in the future.
My husband and I both tried the folding method, but the problem is we don’t have dresser drawers (just shelves in the wardrobe), so we’ll se how that’ll work out. But it definitely feels good to get rid of a lot of stuff we don’t need or want. I think the show is great for inspiring us to declutter and organise our stuff, just like it seems to have inspired your daughter.
