How to dress down a Kimono

how to wear a kimono over 50

You knew this was going to happen, right? How could I post a dressed-up version of the kimono without posting a dressed-down version? So, here we are…

I’m back to my old tricks: lazy styling: no jewellery, a graphic t-shirt…

But I wanted to put together a minimalist, dressed-down outfit using the same key elements as in the dressed-up kimono look: the same pair of black trousers and the same bag.

By the way, I love these trousers! They’re high-waisted! And cut for a woman with a big bum and thighs! Made of thick but soft viscose, so they don’t need ironing! Perfect!

OK, I had to shorten them, so not perfect, but you get my drift. Besides, I always need to shorten my trousers; I’m short (162 cm, in case you want to know).

Did I mention the trousers are high-waisted?!? In my book, that’s the holy grail of trousers. Something that actually fits my body. And doesn’t need to be yanked up all the time.

I bought the trousers at the Marimekko outlet sale months ago (September? October? Oh, who cares…), but I only started wearing them during my trip to Madeira. Because, you know, they had to be shortened. And yes, I shortened them myself. I’m perfectly capable of doing that; I just have no time, and even less patience, for stuff like that.

I love your minimalistic attitude, the graphic t-shirt, cute pants and comfy&elegant sneakers which are enhanced by the fab kimono. And totally support that high waisted pants are like The Holy Grial!, I’ve had this feeling of ‘hallelujah!’ every time I’ve found a pair of them in my size and style!
I think that this ensemble is fabulous and really love it, it’s just the kind of outfil which makes anybody feel comfortable, comfident and gorgeous!. Actually inspiring!

Thank you! If only fashion designers could understand that women are smaller around their waists than around their hips, maybe they would then understand why we need high-waisted trousers…

I love wearing occasion wear casually – I think it’s cool. The trend towards trainers really helps this I think. Fabulous look Tiina xx Maria

Thanks, Maria! I wear anything casually. Even my ‘formal wear’ is casual. I don’t think I could do ‘formal’ even if I tried… And yes, trainers help, and your feet thank you for it, too.

What a beautiful kimono I hope you can hang it on your wall too nice to keep in a cupboard.

Thank you Flora! I have a few kimonos, but most of them are ‘loungewear’. But this one I plan to wear a lot as part of my everyday wardrobe (in summer, obviously), so, I’m eager to find ways to incorporate in casual outfits.

So glad to see your beautiful kimono in casual mode too. I totally agree with you on high waist pants for us girls with thighs and a bottom.

Thanks, Jill. I think most women would prefer high-waisted trousers. It’s just fashion designers who fail to understand this.

That kimono is such a great piece. Love how you styled it with a graphic Tee. It’s sort of west meets east in Europe. Thanks for being a regular guest at the party!

Thanks, Ruth. This is a pair of shoes that I bought on a whim, and for a while I thought I would never wear them. Turns out, I’ve been wearing them probably more than any other pair of shoes I have, they’re just so comfy.

This is such a cute look, Tiina. I’m glad you found a great pair of pants, those can be hard to come by!

Thank you, Kimberly! Yes, finding trousers that fit can be a nightmare, and I just hate having to look for a pair of trousers.
