How to Accessorize a Kaftan

Marimekko kaftan

I’m back!

Did you miss me? At least a little bit? I sure missed you my dear readers. But I also needed a break, not just from work but also from the blog and social media. It’s good to take some time off from social media every once in a while.

Of course, if you follow me on Instagram, you know that it wasn’t a complete break as I kept posting some occasional photos on all of my 3 Instagram accounts… But for the most part I’ve used Instagram mainly to watch kitten videos.

Anyway… in the past two weeks I’ve spent some time in the U.K., travelling in Germany, a day in Riga (Latvia), and relaxing at home in Helsinki. And of course the weather has been way too hot for my liking…

The kaftan season…

So, this is what I’ve been wearing on most days. I know, it’s basically just a shapeless sack, and it makes me look 3 sizes bigger. But I couldn’t care less. It’s the perfect thing to wear on a hot day as it barely touches my skin.

And because it’s made from viscose, it’s just as comfortable as cotton. And I can just spray myself with cold water when it gets too hot (you know, with one of those spray bottles you use for ironing). This takes care of the wrinkles, too, by the way. Or I could just take a shower wearing it; the dress dries quite fast…

How to accessorize a kaftan

When it comes to accessorising this dress, less is more. The iconic Unikko print, especially in this colour combination, is quite striking on its own. And the simple shape has a carefree vibe that works best with something easy-going and streamlined.

Of course, I need a pair of minimalist sunglasses with just a hint of diva. The bigger the better. I can’t think of a single reason why anyone would wear small sunglasses. I mean, what’s the point? You wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, right?

OK, let’s move on to jewellery next…

You know those photos (in fashion magazines) of boho-chic women in kaftans wearing tons of long necklaces and bracelets? So glam, and so not going to work for me. I simply can’t stand the weight of metal (or beads, or anything) around my neck when it’s hot. No, I want absolutely nothing touching my skin, period.

That leaves me with one option as far as jewellery is concerned: statement earrings. The bigger the better. Because, well, with my hair, I need earrings the size of Christmas tree ornaments if I want them to be visible at all. But then the problem is that huge earrings tend to be too heavy (for my liking) and uncomfortable. The solution: something big but lightweight, like the white wooden baubles or rose gold leather I’m wearing in these pictures. They weigh absolutely nothing but make a huge impact.

By the way, I have nickel allergy, so I never wear the hooks that come with earrings. Instead, I discard the hook and just hang the earrings from a pair white gold hoops.

How would you accessorize this kaftan dress?

So glad you’re back but happy you had a nice break from it all. Everyone needs that once in awhile. Love the print on your kaftan and those earrings!! It’s been hot here also and it got very uncomfortable outside. Been hibernating a bit and getting cabin fever in August! I usually get that in the winter. Today has started out with a little bit of a breeze so it’s refreshing. Sounds like you had a nice vacation travelling around Europe. Hope you have a great day! Looking forward to your next post. Thanks, Arlene. Yes, I had a nice break, and really needed it, too. Now it’s back to normal, with work etc…

You look gorgeous despite the hot!. I love your kaftan, the magnificent print and floaty fabric, and the colors!!. And totally agree that viscose is the best fabric ever to wear in a heatwave as it’s breathable and flows when you walk!.
Obviously I have to agree on big earrings, but as a maximalist myself, I’d wear a bunch of bracelets and necklaces, but the lighter ones I could find!.
I love your sandals and bag too!

Thank you dear! Hot weather is always a real challenge for me, and I’m not talking about just outfits. I get heatstrokes very easily, so I really try to stay in a cool place, as much as possible.
I love the idea of big bracelets and necklaces, and I envy people who wear that on a hot day. As for me, earrings is all I can bear. Maybe a big ring.

Talk about a fabulous print!! That’s the advantage of a piece like this…it needs basically nothing else.

Thanks, Jodie! I agree: this is a statement print and it deserves to be the focal point of the outfit.

Really pretty large scale print works well with your complexion. Since I don’t wear earrings (but they look fab on you), I would probably accessorize with a long chunky necklace.

Thanks, Tami. I have another kaftan dress (in ink blue) with this print, too.
A chunky necklace would probably look fab with a kaftan dress. For me, hot weather is the problem: I can’t stand anything touching my skin.

Thanks, Ruth. Would you believe that this print was first introduced in 1964? It’s older than I am!
