Dressing for Hot Weather

Would it be terrible if I said I don’t really like summer? I mean, I like the idea of summer. Just the reality bites a bit too much… And by that I mean of course the hot weather, which really makes me suffer (or stay indoors). And no jokes about my ethnic background here: genetically modified to suit cold weather etc… I dislike winter and cold weather maybe even more than I dislike hot summer days…

Which brings me to the topic of hot weather dressing. What do you wear when all you want to do is pour some ice water over your overheated head…

Linen is supposed to be the summer material, right? I certainly seem to have quite a collection of linen trousers. Only one jacket, though, the one I’m wearing here. I bought the jacket because I thought it would be nice and cool in the evenings, or maybe I could wear it to work. The jacket is still on its probationary period, I haven’t quite decided whether I like it or not…

It sure wrinkles easily… and yes, I do wear linen trousers, so I’m familiar with the problem.  and I do have an iron. At least I think I do… maybe not. I haven’t seen one for… ups, I think I just outed myself. Yes, I admit, I don’t iron… I’m just lazy I guess. And in hot weather the last thing I want to do is stand over the hot iron…  Besides, linen wrinkles when you even look at it, so it’s really waste of time and energy, don’t you think?

I like the jacket because it’s fitted and goes with most of my clothes. It’s also unlined, and washable. So, the real test comes when I need to wash it… Will it look nice enough without ironing? Because if it won’t, it probably won’t see the light of day until next summer…

What do you like to wear in hot weather?

You look so great in that color. I just got a linen shirt from J Jill and it is awesome…it is so soft and doesn't wrinkle…one of the best linen garments I have worn. Some wrinkle so badly I just can't do it..I guess it truly takes finding the ones that do and sticking with them. You do look lovely in this outfit!

I sometimes hang linen clothes in the bathroom while I take the shower… Anything to avoid ironing…

The color and fabric look great on you. (My friend used to wear linen a lot in the summer. She called it rich wrinkles.) I found you on visible Monday. Have a great week!

Rich wrinkles! That's great! And so accurate, as a lot of linen clothes need to be dry-cleaned, especially if they're lined.

I am fond of wearing linen in our summer, I am an ironer but not excessively so. I was once told by a lady in an upmarket store that you can tell it is real linen if it creases, I have always remembered this.Love your jacket colour on you.Hope you have some cooler weather soon.

Thanks, Jill. Yes, real linen creases… It might be better to have some sort of a mix, with stretch or a spandex, just 5%, I wonder why there aren't more clothes made of linen-mix fabrics? I would certainly get some.

Thanks, Jessica. Neutrals wash me out completely, so I always wear them with bright colours.

Oh, pretty! Love the rosy color, and like it especially well with the taupey-brown trouser and simple white shirt. Why is it that other fabrics just look sloppy when wrinkled, but linen looks casual and cool when it wrinkles? Our expectations, perhaps! At any rate, you look classically cool.

I think we've just been brainwashed into thinking that linen is somehow 'special' when in fact it's just really annoying and high-maintenance…
