Dressing against body type

Wide-leg trousers…

Is that a look I can pull off? With a big, chunky cardi?

Well, according to fashion mags, this is the look that supposedly makes you look taller and slimmer, elongating your legs (especially if you wear heels).

cashmere cardigan

Sure it does. If you’re tall and slim to begin with.

But what if you’re short and stumpy? Is this really the miracle outfit that makes a curvy girl with a big booty and short legs look like a supermodel?

Of course not: no outfit will do that. But if I find a pair of trousers that can accommodate my big booty and my thunder thighs and fit around my waist, I will buy it. You see, most trousers that fit around my hips have a gap big enough to fit two or three of me around the waist…

Chanel bag

But I’m not fooling myself: wide-leg trousers were not designed for a body like mine, and therefore it’s not the most flattering outfit I could wear (If I wanted to dress with a wow effect, I’d wear a pencil skirt). But on a cold day I want something warmer, so trousers it is. I’ll make it work.

I’m wearing:

cashmere cardigan: Brora (old) / trousers: Marks and Spencer / t-shirt: Mango jeans (old) /

shoes: Clarks (old) / sunglasses: Dolce & Gabbana / bag: Chanel

Do you ever dress against body type?

You look great in this! Actually, I think the two long lines of (1) long cardigan and (2) high-waisted trousers is pretty lengthening. I think the brain adds up the two lines as if they did not overlap. At the same time, I entirely agree with you that "conventionally flattering" definitely doesn't have to be one's aim in getting dressed!

Thanks! but I'm a bit sceptical about the lenghtening bit… But that's OK; I'm short(ish) and I'm fine with that.

I think the trousers look quite nice. LIke you I have short legs and wearing anything that is remotely long means I need to wear some kind of heel to try to balance it all out. I love your sunglasses. I think the whole look is rather chic without trying too hard.bisousSuzanne

Yes, and heels and me, we just don't get along. These are my 'pretend heels': the heels is maybe 3 cm ans sometimes even that feels too high.

Thanks, Laura. I often dress up casual pieces (or dress down dressier pieces) ,I like to mix it up a bit this way.

There are guidelines for fashion and then there is our individual taste. The latter can trump the former. If we like something, that's justification enough. Rules be damned!

I usually try to strike some sort of a balance between what looks good and what feels comfortable. But there are days when I need some 'comfort wear'.

I find that when I wear wide leg pants like you are wearing, I have to wear heels and it does make me feel instantly taller and slimmer. I think these pants look perfect on you.Thank you for joining TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you next week. Have a great weekend!Alicewww.happinessatmidlife.com

Yes, heels would look better… But I won't wear heels, no matter what, can't walk in them and they make my feet hurt. The shoes I'm wearing here have rather low heels, but I still find them uncomfortable for longer stretches of time.

I have the same figure issues, Tiina … big booty and thick thighs with a small waist. So hard to find pants that fit just right! You look great and that pink is so pretty on you. Yeah, sometimes to heck with the rules, right?! You look great! Thanks for linking up!OXOXDawn Lucyhttp://fashionshouldbefun.blogspot.com

Oh yes, looking for pants is awful, they're all cut for a completely different figure. When I find something that fits me, I buy it in at least 2-3 colours…
