A pair of trousers and a t-shirt
That’s what I wear most of the time, whatever the season (in winter I just swap the t-shirt for a cashmere top). A bit boring, maybe, but it suits my lifestyle. I’m a casual girl, both on and off duty.
Yes, I could wear this to work (the dress code is very relaxed, at best, or non-existent in Finland). Besides, a teacher in a very formal outfit would scare the students away…
However, I didn’t wear this to work. I’m on ‘holiday’ (= that period in summer when freelance teachers don’t get paid). So, let’s call this ‘holiday attire’ now.
And as you can see, I’m wearing the same trousers I was wearing in my previous post. I’ve had these silk-linen trousers for a couple of years. They’re really comfortable and fit me well. But I never know how to style them.
It’s the colour. No, don’t tell me ‘but black goes with anything‘. It doesn’t. Black really only looks good with white or gold or leopard print. It makes any other colour look dull and muted.
However, I didn’t want to wear something black and white here. Mainly the because black and white combo makes me look dull and muted. And pale. And a bit sickly. You get the idea: my face needs colour. Or I need colour. Today, anyway.
So, this is an experiment of sorts. And I’m not completely happy with the results. Basically, I wish I had these trousers in brown, they would look so much nicer with this t-shirt. And I have so many other t-shirts I could wear with brown trousers, too. I need brown trousers!!!
In the meantime, I have these totally fab black trousers that fit me so well, are so comfortable, and that I hardly ever wear. What should I do with them?

How do you wear black?

I like your casual&cool style, and I like your ‘Real Life’ approach to fashion, it’s something I really appreciate!
And your t-shirt totally rocks and your bag is really cute, so I like this outfit, but probably I’d like it more with a pair of printed trousers (maximalist as I am). But the trousers you’ve worn are ok, comfortable and cool!.
Obviously, I have to agree with you that black doesn’t go with anything, I think that black goes with black and that’s all. Even if black and white (with a touch of red) is a classic combo, it’s not everybody’s cup of tea!.
Probably you could wear your black trousers with a white and red striped t-shirt, your new white bag and a pink scarf!. And those camper sandals!. I think that your striped t-shirts are fab pieces to mix and match, they go with anything actually!

Thanks! I think that’s precisely why we need blogs: real people (in all shapes and sizes) trying to solve their real-life wardrobe challenging. Fashion magazines have beautiful pictures (and beautiful models and fabulous clothes), but they’re all about unattainable fantasies. I think that as bloggers we can do so much more: we can make style and fashion more accessible. I certainly want to see great outfits on people I can relate to. It makes me feel that I, too, can look good and wear stylish clothes
Its funny but I too have a difficult time trying to find the right top to wear with black trousers. Like you said, people say “oh you can wear anything with black”. No I don’t agree. Your t shirt looks great with the trousers. I have to try that look. Do you like black and white print? Maybe that would look good with the black trousers? I have one top that has a black background with small flowers in different colors and I wear that top with black trousers. What do you think of these ideas? Maybe you’ve tried those and they weren’t for you. I’m sure you will think of other ideas on your own. You are so good at creating nice outfits. Arlene from NJ

Thanks, Arlene. Yes, black really is a difficult colour. At least for me. I could wear these trousers with a white t-shirt with a black print maybe. I usually avoid wearing black near my face as it’s really not a good colour for me (= makes me look worn out). White is a marginally better option… Both black and white look better on people with a darker skin, or a great tan. I just look faded… That’s why I usually prefer the navy and white combo: it’s so much kinder to my face.
Great casual style and LOVING those sunnies!! Perfect!

Thanks, Sherry!
I think the burgundy tee looks great with the black pants! If you’re having troubles figuring out what colours to wear with them, why not try a print? Stripes are always a good bet!
Hope that you had a great weekend 🙂
