Things are getting busy here at Elegance Revisited headquarters. That’s because this is also the headquarters for I-Have-To-Work-For-A-living Ltd… That’s my excuse for not posting a new outfit this week.
However, I wanted to write a little celebratory post because it’s my birthday on Friday. So, I created the cute little composite artwork you see above.
Yes, I know: as a child, my hair was shiny, manageable, and straight. The curls appeared almost overnight when I hit puberty. And, as you no doubt know, it’s been a lot less manageable since then…
But one thing I haven’t lost is my attitude; if anything, it just gets worse with age. The middle-aged Tiina may not have a crown, but she sure likes her statement accessories. Maybe I’ll revisit the idea of wearing a crown when I get old. I could always blame it on dementia or something…
So, how will this ageing little princess celebrate her birthday, you might ask. Well, usually (a.k.a before Covid19), there would be a big military parade, with flags flying, speeches by dignitaries and generals etc. That’s because it’s an important day for the Finnish Defence Forces. The 4th of June, I mean; not my birthday. I just hope to have some cake.
Anyway, I thought we could have a look at some birthday outfits from the past, starting from last year. This photo was taken on my actual birthday, even though I only posted it a couple of weeks later.
Well, 2020 was a very unusual year for all of us, but for me and Professor M it also meant breaking a tradition (or something that had almost become a tradition over the years): there was no travel involved, and no restaurant reservations. It was the first time in over 10 years that I spent my birthday at home in Helsinki. But at least there was cake.
So, about the traditions I mentioned… For over 10 years, my darling husband used to take me to Barcelona for my birthday. This photo was taken the day before my birthday (I was traveling on the day itself) in 2019.
And this was in 2018:
The 2017 photo was taken when we were on our way to a nice birthday dinner :
Have a nice weekend!

Hyvää syntymäpäivää Tiina! It must be fabulous to have all those flags and military parade on your birthday regardless the other reasons there might be for them. -q

Thank you. Yes, next year will be better… Although, that’s seems a bit of a dejá vu; didn’t I say that last year, too?
Happy Birthday! Funny, my hair was also manageable, fairly straight and smooth before puberty. I wonder what that is all about…

Thanks, Lise! I think it has something to do with hormones; curly hair reacts to them somehow (along with humidity, mood, the alignment of stars and who knows what else…)
He-he 🙂 Oh, okay, maybe my hair will get straighter heading towards menopause, but no, I moved also close to the shore line 6 years ago. I guess I have to accept that it is what it is 🙂 Seriously though my current hairdresser says that once my dye has grown out my silver hair will be less curly but I am not holding out much hope. I have seen many silver haired curly tops on the net. I know I am supposed to embrace my curls etc, etc but sheesh what I would not do for manageable hair. Obviously I am having a bad hair day as I am sure you can tell 😉
Tiina I just googled about hormones and curly hair. Something else popped out. Apparently perms can make permanent changes to hair follicles resulting in straight hair going curly forever! I had quite a few perms as a teen in the 80s. I recall reading your Mom and Aunt experimented on your hair in their salon. Who knew that a Perm really was going to be PERMANENT!!

My hair is a bit of a mess of curly and wavy, in places almost straight. But I’ve found a few really kinky curly grey hairs, too; they’re 3 times thicker, too. I guess if I ever have a fully grey hair, it will look like a poodle on top of my head…
As for perms, I’ve never had one. My mother never allowed me to have any chemical procedures; no colour, no perm (or chemical straightening). Yes, she loved to experiment on my (long) hair, but it was mainly rolling or braiding technique etc (remember those Bo Derek cornrows? I had to sit still for hours so that she could practice). On the other hand, everyone on my father’s side of the family has naturally curly hair.
Have a great day! Hope you’ll get back to Barcelona soon.

Thanks, Flora! Oddly enough, I haven’t missed travelling that much. Not yet, anyway.
Love the 2020 birthday dress and 2018 birthday shirt!

Thanks! Yes, there was cake…
Tiina, I hope that you had a wonderful birthday! I enjoyed your birthday outfits from past years. My birthday the past two years has been rather uneventful as well! I hope you do break out a crown for a birthday outfit long before you hit the stage of dementia. Because why the heck not?!

Thanks! Yes, it was great. We went out to a restaurant, these days that is something special. And yes, I should think about the crown. Maybe next year…
Happy belated birthday! I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating, even if it was a quieter one at home! I decided not to celebrate my birthday last year with the usual big family meal at a restaurant – even though the restaurants are open and have been for a long time I just feel a bit unsafe in them – whenever a case gets out of quarantine it always spreads in a cafe or restaurant! Like you, I of course still had the cake though, haha! 🙂
Thank you for joining the #WeekdayWear Link Up! Hope you are having a lovely weekend 🙂

Thanks! yes, it was great, we went to a restaurant, on a small island. I understand why you feel not safe in restaurants, though, I feel the same. Luckily, as it was really warm and sunny, most people wanted to eat outdoors on the terrace. I don’t like eating al fresco; I don’t do so well sitting in the sun. So, we decided to eat indoors, there were fewer people.
