Attitude Adjustment

leather jacket and leopard print over 40

I sometimes think I’m a bit bi-polar when it comes to style…

It’s as if I have two distinct style personalities: there’s the wannabe fashionista who likes her clothes sophisticated, streamlined and classy and would give her right arm for perfect hair… And then there’s the angry rock chick who just can’t be bothered with mirrors and make up…

when I was younger, it was the angry rock chick who had the upper hand: in my teens and early twenties I used to live in jeans and my studded black leather jacket. In my thirties I realised that I needed a more professional look, but one with enough attitude to keep me from having an identity crisis…

And now… the leather jacket still comes out to play every now and then, but now it has to play second fiddle to colour and a streamlined silhouette. And I’m certain that I’ve lost none of the edge in the process…

In a way this outfit is an attempt to merge my two style personalities, the wannabe fashionista and the angry rock chick… So, I guess that makes me a middle-aged style addict with an attitude… I can live with that.

What’s your style personality? And has it changed over the years?

Tiina, you make a very stylish rock chick. The ability to change our outward persona simply by a change of clothing is always so rewarding. That`s the pleasure of ageing a confidence in who we are.

Thanks, Jill. I think it may be that as we age we just simply stop caring about other people's opinions… After years of trying to fit into someone else's ideal of this or that, it's liberating to just wear whatever you want, whenever you want… Or maybe I'm just turning into an angry crone… Either way, experimenting is fun.

Thanks, Natalia. Yes, I agree, we are all multifaceted personalities, sometimes the aspects of our personalities clash… But that's what makes personal style interesting.
