The Classic Coat: Part 1/3

casual wear over 40

What do you look for in a coat?

Besides the obvious (warmth, fit for purpose etc), that is? Well, if you live in a cold climate, you probably need quite a few coats to get you through the year. And as nice as it is to have some variety, few of us have the financial means or storage space to get a different coat for each outfit we create.

So, versatility is key. Well, when it comes to criteria for choosing a coat, versatility comes right after warmth and practicality, in my opinion. As it's not really feasible to have a different coat for all my different outfits, I need a coat that goes with everything.

Take this blue coat, for instance. A simple coat such as this one can work with a variety of outfits and styles. It can be trendy or classic, depending on  how you accessorize it. To prove my point, I will show you 3 very different outfits, all featuring this simple, classic coat.

No, not all at once. You know me: this is going to be a series of 3 posts over a period of time, each featuring an outfit consisting of either jeans or trousers, a simple top and some accessories. And this blue coat, of course.

So, this is outfit number 1: understated, relaxed, and with minimal accessories. It is the coat that pulls this look together, adding some polish to an otherwise very casual look.

I wanted to put together an outfit that is harmonious and easy-going, like when you wear a lot of neutrals, except with some colour. You know the type of outfit I'm talking about: everything sort of blends in together, nothing stands out or demands attention. It's comfortable and casual and perfect for a day out and about running errands or going shopping.

How would you wear this blue coat?

  1. Oh, I'd wear it with a velvet maxi-skirt in purple or purple toned blue, a dark blouse with tiny pinky flowers. And then another time with forest-green corduroy... and again, with mustard or honey yellow, and some browns. Great coat, and yes - it could go with anything and improve each outfit. It'd be great over all black, too.

    1. That sounds interesting. I'd definitely try something brown. Not sure about the mustard, though (lovely colour but it tends me make me look a bit sickly...).

  2. You are right, this is a very good coat. I wish I had it 😎. The photos are nice, especially that first one is impressive.

  3. A good quality coat is a musthave in cold winters like now. I have never had it to cold in a whool coat. And they are always elegant.

    1. Oh I agree. Although this coat is for warmer spring days, it's not very thick. That's why I've been aching to wear it again, it makes me think of spring.
I never wear a wool coat on a cold day. Well, depends on your definition of cold, of course; I think it's cold when the temperature is below freezing, and that calls for something warmer than a wool coat.

  4. It's a fabulous coat, not only the style but that gorgeous colours. It really suits you too. Jacqui

    1. Thanks, Jacqui. Blue is one of my favourite colours. Or what I wear instead of neutrals...

  5. It's a great classic coat and the color is wonderful to play with. Thanks for linking up, xo

  6. Can't beat a quality classic coat . This is a perfect colour for all your jewel tones. I am not a blue wearer , my classic would always be black.

    1. Thanks, Jill.
Blue is so much kinder on my pale skin than black, that's probably why I wear it so much ;)

  7. Lovely coat, you look great in cobalt! I love a classic cut coat and enjoy seeing a different color.
Love your sneakers too, I have been wearing my slip ons more lately too!
    thanks for linking!

    1. I've been wanting to wear sneakers for months. Literally... Living in Finland means I've been wearing some sort of boots since November, so I jumped at the chance to wear something else when I was in London (where these photos were taken). Spring can't come soon enough...

  8. Your coat is such a lovely shade of blue and I like the longer length. I enjoyed seeing it styled more casually and the red stripes are so fun! Thanks for linking up, Tiina.

  9. Tiina, I love, love, love this classic look and your amazing versatile coat! Thanks for linking up with me!

  10. Beautiful coat, I love the colour. A good quality coat is so versatile, and will look great with any outfit. Very nice casual look. Thanks for linking up!
