Easy Layering

layering over 40

What do you wear to go out?

In winter? Make that early winter. Which means rain, snow, sleet, slush, and some more rain. Not necessarily in that order. However, it's not unusual for all of them to make an appearance within the same week, and sometimes even within the same day.

The point is, it's going to be wet outdoors, and good shoes are a must. And no, I don't have a car. I don't need one; I live in a big city with excellent public transport system. And I walk a lot, and spend a lot of time at various bus stops / train stations etc. No wonder, then, that I've been practically living in my new cool wellies / rubber boots...

I consider cashmere my winter staple. But I want my cashmere a bit on the lighter side, as indoor temperatures in Finland tend to be quite warm, even in winter... And a light-weight cashmere cardi is the perfect piece to accompany a sleeveless / short-sleeved dress: easy to put on or take off as you wish.

Why a sleeveless / short-sleeved dress, you might ask. Well, I hate layering, for starters. And wearing anything long-sleeved under a cardigan would be too much layering for me, make me feel as if my clothes were restricting me. It's for the same reason you seldom see me wearing a a jacket: if the fabric doesn't have any stretch, I find  a jacket too constricting.

This black and white striped knit dress has short sleeves, so it fits nicely under a leather jacket, a trench coat, or long cashmere cardigan without feeling bulky or constricting. In other words, it's the perfect layering piece for someone who hates layering...

What about you, do you like layering? Or do you hate it as much as I do?

  1. Great look for the changing weather, Tiina. I am envious of your life without a car - I think walking and using public transportation is wonderful. It would not work here in Florida : < thanks for linking up,

    1. Thanks, Patti.
I'm a terrible driver (and I mean really, really bad), so a car is not an option...

  2. You look warm and cozy in that outfit. Perfect for these cold months! Lovely cardi - I love the colour x #fakeituntilyoumakeit

  3. I can fully understand how you have to adjust to these (early) winter circumstances. It is because of this that I hate travelling by public transport. I haven't got your lovely hair. Even a little bit of wind blows my hair back into its original state: thin, little of it and hanging down. So I use a car a lot. Not really good for the environment nor my health.
I think you actually look quite sexy in this dress. It has a Marilyn Monroe effect. Really nice.

    1. Oh Greetje, you're so sweet, I mean 'lovely hair'??? I wish I could see it that way. A bit of wind or rain and my hair goes completely crazy: frizzy and all over the place. Then again, it looks messy even without the rain... I guess we all want what we don't have.

  4. Your weather does sound a bit of a challenge , the black and white stripe dress with the long cardigan teamed with those fancy wellies are most definately the perfect solution. I so envy you living with a good public transport system , even though I live in a small city its public transport is almost non existent.

    1. Oh, not a challenge, really, just a fact of life. It's a Nordic thing: don't fight the weather, just get on with life as usual... Thanks, Jill

  5. I'm with you on jackets but I do love myotos. I'm with you on appropriate footwear too. Miserable being in a wet country isn't it. I'm envious of the toe less booties the US bloggers wear. So not workable for me in the autumn. Anyway I'm in UGGS today having froze my feet yesterday

  6. I love layered looks like this for winter! The striped dress is so gorgeous on you, and pairs so nicely with your long cardi. Plus, I absolutely adore your pure! So cute!

  7. It is funny you say you hate layering because you always do a great job with your layered outfits. And look another awesome statement striped piece. Love how you styled that black+white dress with wine. I would never guess those were rubber booties either.

Welcome by Thursdays to link your fabulous style with me. I also think you'd like my last two style posts. Happy Hump Day!!

    Ada =))

    1. Thanks, Ada. Yes, I hate layering, but this is sort of 'layering light': nothing constricting and prioritising comfort.
The rubber boots are perfect, I wear them all the time. Well, with this weather...

  8. lovely dress and lovely layering!, you rock your stripes!, and so fab rubber booties, they look cool and modern, and really practical. Even in our mild Winter, waterproof shoes are really important! I'm a huge fan of comfy&cool shoes!

    1. Thanks, Monica! I'm a fan of comfy shoes, too. That's the only kind of shoes I buy. I have no use for shoes I can't walk in.
