Bad Hair, Pattern Mixing and Layering

raincoat over 40

Rain, rain and more rain...

Summer has taken a bit more autumnal turn recently. I wouldn't say it's cold exactly (it's only August, after all; we won't even mention 'cold' until late September, that would be bad Karma or something...)... Let's just say it's a little cooler, with some showers a bit of a Nordic monsoon these past couple of days...

Anyway, we had to take these pictures quite fast because rain does terrible things to my hair...

It's a bit like Gremlins... You remember Gremlins, right? I'm talking about the 80's film, of course, about the cute fuzzy creatures that turned into angry little monsters when they got wet. Yep, that's me, I turn into a Gremlin when it rains...

Well, let's just say that my hair sort of gets three times bigger all of a sudden. And curly. No, we're not talking about silky soft Rapunzel curls here, it's more like having a wet poodle on my head... So, a mere 15 minutes after these pictures were taken the hair was an enormous mess of small waves and frizzy, tight corkscrew curls... No, there are no pictures, it's not pretty.

And you know those hair products that are supposed to keep your hair silky smooth and control the frizz? Waste of money, totally useless. I know: I've tried it all. As my hairdresser once told me: only a teflon coating might keep my (very fine and thin) hair from turning into a frizzy mess in the rain. In other words, a rainy day is a bad hair day, get over it. Therefore, I'm trying to distract you here with my pattern mixing  and layering mania...

  1. Oh I am familiar with that! The frizz is awfull then. Nothing helps, just wash it all over again!

    1. Yes, frizz is unfortunately just a fact of life if you have a curly hair, it's a total waste of time to even bother doing your hair on a rainy day.

  2. "...a wet poodle on my head..." -- I'm still laughing!

  3. A wet poodle on your head - what a funny turn of phrase. :) I haven't watched Gremlins, though I heard the name of course. My hair gets wavy when it's wet, though not curly like yours.

I really like your rain coat, Tiina! Great pattern and color, an I am always for pattern mixing - the more, the merrier!

    1. My hair is wavy when I blowdry it, and a curly mess if I don't. It actually varies a bit, depending on the weather and humidity. My hair definitely has a mind of its own, I never know what it will look like when I wake up...

  6. Great pattern mixing , the distraction worked well, specially that interesting coat. I know all about rain, we have had the wettest Winter for many years . Unlike you my dead straight hair just hangs like bits of string, good thing I like hats.

  8. I am swooning over your coat, Tiina! It is so fabulous! And the pattern mixing is perfection. Didn't even notice your hair! I am in perpetual bad hair day mode lately...with trying to grow out a pixie cut and the awkwardness that comes with that and then 90% humidity every day...I don't know if I'm at Gremlin status, but maybe like drowned rat level! I am relying heavily on headbands and barrettes!

Thanks for linking up On the Edge of the Week! I hope to see you again next week. Have a wonderful weekend!

  10. I'm definitely in the wet poodle club! And I agree, most products don't work. The distraction technique is ideal in these circumstances and you've certainly mastered the art. Gorgeous colours in your Seasalt coat. I've often looked at them and thought about buying one as they have such lovely prints.

I have quite a collection of rain coats, and I think I could use a few more still.
