Let's Do the Time Warp...

jeans and plaid over 40

Remember the 80's?

This post was supposed to be about casual weekend wear, but looking at these pictures now I'm having a bit of a déjà vu moment: jeans, belt, scarf, checked shirt... I have a distinct memory of wearing something very similar throughout the early 80's...

Here we go: this photo was taken on a family holiday in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife in 1980, when I was a few months short of 15.

1980s

Damn... I would have thought my style had evolved a bit more since then. I mean, look at this: even the colour scheme is the same! Well, almost...

And the hair! Yes, I've had more or less the same hairstyle since the early 80's... I blame my genes: I have very fine, very curly hair. It really makes no difference whatsoever if I use this product or that; my hair does its own thing as soon as I step out of the door. And trust me, as a hairdresser's daughter I've tried pretty much everything...

So, am I hopelessly stuck in a time warp?

Maybe not... Obviously, this old photograph shows my style DNA, or the roots of my signature style, so to speak. And besides, classics transcend trends and decades.

40+ jeans
studded belt

Speaking of the 80's...  Remember those high-waisted trousers from the mid-80's? I miss them... I'm getting really tired of having to constantly pull my trousers up. That's the reason why I'm wearing a belt here. The obvious solution is to go one size smaller, you say? Err, no. One size smaller wouldn't fit my somewhat sizeable behind and thighs... BTW, these jeans are supposedly cut for a curvier figure, i.e. they come higher up in the back and have a smaller waist. And I still keep yanking them up all the time. And yes, I had the same problem back in the 80's, too: my hip-waist ratio has always meant that I need a belt, or those wonderful mid-80's high-waisted trousers...

I'm wearing:
coat: Marks and Spencer (old) / jeans: Next / shirt: KappAhl / belt: Tosca Blu /
ankle boots: Clarks / bag: Chanel  / scarf: Zara (old) / sunglasses: Tiffany & Co (old)

So, what do you think: is this outfit caught in a time warp or a sophisticated update?

    1. Thanks! You know what the downside of having curly hair is? Every morning when you wake up and see yourself in the mirror, you think the 80's are back....

    1. Yes, it is. And sometimes a bit spooky, too.

  4. You just knew early on what worked! You got it licked young. Oh, I remember high waisted - so much more comfortable than many of these low slung jeans nowdays. I'm with you on the hoiking up - pain in the derriere!
    Great shirt and scarf combo!

    1. Thanks, Connie. Yes, I think I prefer classic style. Although, I did have a short 'experimental, crazy fashion' phase, in the late 80's... No, there are no pictures.

  6. No I don't think you are in a time warp , you just got your own sense of style way earlier than most of us. Those of us with dead straight hair have often wished for your curls .

    1. Thanks, Jill. Well, every time it rains I wish I had a poker straight hair... The curly hair look on a rainy day? Try wet poodle...
