Casual Summer Travel Wardrobe, part 2

travel wardrobe 40+

Linen: love it or hate it?

That depends... I love it when I first put it on. And hate it exactly 10 minutes later. And I really hate it when I'm contemplating whether or not my linen shirt needs ironing...

Yet, here they are: the two identical (except for the colour) linen shirts that form the backbone of my summer travel wardrobe for a hot climate. And yes, they were comfortable and kept me coo(ish) enough on my recent trip to Barcelona. And now that I have washed them, they will probably be be waiting forever for me me to 'get inspired' to iron them...

There used to be these types of shirts made of washed silk, log ago. I'm talking about the late 80's-early 90's here. remember those shirts? They were made of thick silk, but you could just toss them into a washing machine, and a dryer. No ironing needed, ever. I miss those shirts...

Anyway...
My travel wardrobe necessities (besides shirts with long sleeves to protect me from the sun) are comfortable shoes (only flats) and a sun umbrella.

A Sun Umbrella?

I'm not romantic or nostalgic or even retro; there is a purely practical reason for carrying a sun umbrella. It provides instant cover, and I can forgo the sunblock (I really, really hate the stuff). And, as you can see, I'm quite pale (and remain pale, even after my holiday, not to mention the almost around the clock sunlight we get in Finland this time of the year), and some sort of protection is a must. BTW, it's a folding sun umbrella, so it's easier to carry around and pack into a suitcase (see the end of the post for a link where to get one)...

Adolfo Dominguez tote

I'm wearing:
linen shirts: Marks and Spencer / pink dress: Ghost (old) / trousers: Marks and Spencer (old) / top: H&M (old) / white shoes: Gabor / gold shoes: Clarks (old) / pink and white gingham bag: Coach (s/s 2014) / brown bag: Adolfo Dominguez /sunglasses: Tom Ford (left, old), Miu Miu (right, old) / necklaces: East (left, old), Hirst Antiques (right) / sun umbrella: James Smith & Sons

Which linen shirt look do you prefer, the left or the right one?

  1. I know what you mean about linen , I have a love/hate relationship with it too. Both of the shirts suit you really well but I do like the pink. I must admit I have never used a sun umbrella , I guess maybe because I love a hat.

    1. I've tried hats a few times, but they really don't suit me. Such a pity. I guess I don't have a 'hat face'... and my head is too big, too. Or my hair, the hair sort of pushes the hat up, it looks weird...

    1. Thanks, Jess! I find linen very frustrating. It's the ironing...

  3. I have the same dilemma with linen! I want to love it but I get so frustrated with the wrinkles. Both tops are so classic, but I think the blue is my fav- so versatile!

    1. Thanks, Jenna! I guess we just have to accept the wrinkles, as the price we pay for lovely linen. Thanks for the invite!

  4. Both are great looks. I really love the pink ombre bag of yours, too! Wrinkles can be a pain, I guess you could try that wrinkle spray...

  5. I feel your paint about linen but I figured it's just the way it is and just accept it. I love your gingham purse - it's so fun!

  6. Thanks 4 linking up to Top of the World Style. What a great and brave idea to use the umbrella for shade.

    1. Thanks, Nicole! It's a sun umbrella, or a parasol, so it's coated with sunblock.

  7. I love these outfits! The pink one is so pretty, I must say one of my favorites from you. When travelling, comfort is key and if comfort could meet style somewhere in the middle, that's a plus already! Thumbs up, Tiina!

    1. Thanks! Yes, pink is one of the colours that always makes me look my best, in my book it's a 'classic' and a sure thing. Oh yes, it's always quite a balancing act, between comfort and style. For me comfort comes first, always. Style sometimes gets compromised in extreme temperatures (= if it's too hot or too cold I don't care what I look like...)
