Camden Shopfronts

Camden

Camden is one of my favourite places in London. It's not a place I would like to live in, I don't go shopping there, and I only visit it maybe once a year these days. I used to go there more often when I lived nearby, a few years ago, usually for dinner in one of the many restaurants.

Camden

So, why do I call it one of my favourite places, then?

I think Camden epitomises the spirit of London: the heady mix of old and new, refined and eccentric... well maybe more eccentric than refined in this particular case. Camden is in-your-face, unapologetic and gritty; yet no other area in London captures that unique tolerance that welcomes everyone - whoever they are - quite as well.

And then there are the absolutely wacky 3D shop facades on Camden High Street, of course... Yes, Punk is very much alive and well, at least in Camden Town...

I hope you enjoyed our brief 'walk'

  2. I love Camden so much! Such a cool area, you find so many different things around there - they have a mural on John Lennon up there right now that I'm obsessed with!

  3. Oh my god! I've got to go there next time I'm in London! I've never seen anything like it. It looks like there are a lot of shoe shops, or at least a lot of giant shoes on walls. Thanks for sharing the pictures!

    1. It's a definitely a place you should see, but I think the shoe shops are far less interesting than they look like from the outside... However, the original Dr Martens shop is there, too.

    1. There's a lot more to Camden than the highstreet. I'm going to have a longer post in a few weeks when I can sort out all my photos (a bit busy with work, less time for blogging...)

  8. These shop fronts remind me of East Tennessee, where they have a super long street with all of these big bold shopfronts. I think it's a little tacky, but it sure does make things interesting!

    1. That's interesting... Yes, in a way it's tacky, but in Camden that's sort of part of the charm. London is a bit gritty in places...

  9. So fun! Could you believe I had actually never seen a shop front from Camden before? I had only seen pictures from the market and it seemed eccentric enough - but this is even more quirky and odd! I hope to get to walk around the borough when I'm in London in a few weeks!

  11. We stayed in Camden for one night while in London. It wasn't my favorite part of London but I really liked it! It had a funky vibe, I think :)

    1. That's the best thing about London: there are so many different neighbourhoods to explore, and a short bus ride can take you from something very funky and alternative to traditional and refined...
